Greenfield Trail

The area now occupied by the Greenfield Picnic Area and the visitor center was a family farm before the Great Depression. The Greenfield Trail starts in the picnic area, crosses the highway and the headwaters of Big Shoal Creek, and meets the Mossback Ridge Trail. It climbs 210 feet in elevation. This is a good place to start a 14-mile hike to Cove Lake. (Green Blazes) A .3-mile spur leads down an old wagon road to Turkey Springs.

Trail Visitor Reviews

Comment: Greenfield was the first hike I did at Mnt Magazine, and I enjoyed the straightforward hike uphill through the woods. Dappled sunlight, and a few choice butterflies for company, along with the fabulous trees made this a nice walk with my camera.

To ensure you enjoy your state park experience, be aware of the natural world. There are some areas which are potentially hazardous to all visitors. Since it is impractical to post signs at all danger points, use caution when approaching such areas as cliffs, caves, heavily wooded areas, swamps, streams, and lakes. Adults are responsible for children in their care. If unsure about possible hazards, check at the visitor center.
