A Hike Through the Ages
MAY 16, 2008:
2:00 PM - 2:45 PM
Meet Park Interpreter Rachel at the breezeway of Mather Lodge for a fairly easy ¼ mile hike to the Cedar Falls Overlook. Along the way, we will explore the history of Petit Jean State Park, from the distant past to the present day. Of course, this hike will include a look at the park’s “showcase” waterfall. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water. This program will last about 45 minutes.

Owl Prowl
MAY 16, 2008:
8:30 PM - 9:15 PM Cedar Falls Overlook Trailhead
Meet a park interpreter at the Cedar Falls Overlook Trailhead. We will be trying to call in some Petit Jean owls. Wear comfortable shoes and please bring a flashlight. This program will last approximately 45 minutes.

Natural Bridge Hike
MAY 17, 2008:
8:30 AM - 10:30 AM Seven Hollows Trailhead
When Petit Jean was set aside as public land in 1923, it set precedent for the establishment of state parks in Arkansas. Meet a park interpreter at the Seven Hollows trailhead to hike to the Natural Bridge. This is the area that first inspired the creation of the state park. Learn about the history, as well as the unusual geology of the area. This hike is 2½ miles long and will take about 2 hours.

Watchable Backyard Wildlife
MAY 17, 2008:
11:30 AM - 12:00 AM Visitor Center Exhibit Room
Join Park Interpreter Rachel in the Visitor Center Exhibit Room for a program on songbirds and other animals that we may see through the big window, including tips for attracting wildlife to your own backyard! This program will last about 30 minutes.

Rock House Cave Hike
MAY 17, 2008:
2:00 PM - 2:45 PM Meet at the Rock House Cave Trailhead.
Meet Park Interpreter Natalie for a short guided hike to explore the ancient history of the mountain. We'll hike to the park’s archeology site, Rock House Cave, to view ancient Native American pictographs. This hike is ¼ mile long and traverses some moderately difficult terrain.

Sunset Stroll
MAY 17, 2008:
7:30 PM - 8:15 PM Meet at the Richter Overlook on Red Bluff Drive.
Meet Park Interpreter Natalie for a short guided stroll to the CCC Overlook where we will watch the sunset from one of the most spectacular locations in the park. Bring a flashlight for the walk back to your car.

Arkansas Furbearers
MAY 18, 2008:
9:00 AM - 9:30 AM Demonstration Area
Have you ever felt the fur of a beaver? How about a fox? Join Park Interpreter Rachel for about 30 minutes at the Demonstration Area to make some discoveries about the furry mammals of Petit Jean. This program will be moved to the Visitor Center Exhibit Room if it is raining.

Lessons From The Lorax
MAY 18, 2008:

Meet Park Interpreter Natalie to hear one of Dr. Suess’s classic works, The Lorax. This story is great for all ages and can help us appreciate the value of a place like Petit Jean State Park.

The Eagle and the Wren
MAY 23, 2008:
2:00 PM - 2:30 PM Demonstration Area
Meet a park interpreter at the demonstration area to hear Dr. Jane Goodall’s version of this classic story. When the birds have a contest to see which one can fly the highest, they all learn a valuable lesson about cooperation. We will also do a short bird walk and talk about different birds found in Petit Jean State Park. This program will last about 30 minutes.

Want to see the park but don’t know where to start? Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the amphitheater to discover Petit Jean’s top-seven most beloved sights. This program will last about 30 minutes.

Cedar Falls Hike
MAY 24, 2008:
8:30 AM - 10:30 AM Meet at the Mather Lodge breezeway.
To know Petit Jean State Park, you have to know Cedar Falls. Meet Park Interpreter Natalie for a hike to the base of a 95-foot waterfall! The Cedar Falls Hike is 2 miles round trip, moderately strenuous, and will take about 2 hours. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring along plenty of water.

Colors of Nature Walk
MAY 24, 2008:
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM Demonstration Area
Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the Demonstration Area for an easy stroll by the lake in which we will search for different colors found in nature. Then you will be given an opportunity to draw the flowers, insects, or other colorful things that you spotted. This program will last about 30 minutes.

Petit Jean Nature Bingo
MAY 24, 2008:

Join a park interpreter at the demonstration area for a fun game of Nature Bingo. As we play the game, we will learn more about the numerous elements of nature found here at Petit Jean State Park. This program will last around 45 minutes.

Rock House Cave: A Sacred Place

Meet Park Interpreter Natalie to explore the ways which Petit Jean Mountain is a sacred place for people of all cultures past and present. This program is designed to enhance your understanding and enjoyment of this special place we now call Petit Jean State Park. All ages will enjoy it.

A Day in the Civilian Conservation Corps
MAY 25, 2008:
9:45 AM - 10:30 AM Meet at the CCC water tower.
The CCC is an integral part of Petit Jean State Park’s history. Join Park Interpreter Elizabeth to explore the beginnings of the CCC and how it made Petit Jean State Park what it is today.

McElligot’s Pool
MAY 25, 2008:
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM Meet at the boathouse.
Meet Park Interpreter Rachel to hear a classic Dr. Suess story, McElligot’s Pool. Then we will talk about what kinds of creatures may be living in Lake Bailey.

Seven Hollows Wildflower Hunt
MAY 25, 2008:
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
A terrible forest fire swept through the Seven Hollows area of Petit Jean Mountain in August of 20, but one positive result was that it became a great place to find wildflowers! Join Park Interpreter Natalie for this hunt for blooming wildflowers. We'll walk at a leisurely pace and use field guides to identify what we see. This is a great way to truly connect with nature during your visit to the park.

Cedar Creek Wildflower Hike
MAY 26, 2008:
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM Meet at the Pioneer Cabin (Cedar Creek Trailhead).
Join Park Interpreter Natalie for an excursion to look for spring wildflowers in the area surrounding Cedar Creek. This hike is about 1 ¼ miles long and will take about 1 ½ hours. It does NOT go to Cedar Falls, but does cover one of the most beautiful areas of the park. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

Meet Park Interpreter Natalie to play some fun games that will help children develop skills to better sense and understand the natural world. This is a fun way for families to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors together.

The Best Idea Arkansas Ever Had

8:30 PM - 9:15 PM Meet at the amphitheater.
Your visit to Petit Jean State Park is part of a long and special legacy. In September 1923, Governor Thomas McRae signed legislation to create Arkansas’s first state park on Petit Jean Mountain. Meet Park Interpreter BT at the amphitheater to discover the history of our flagship state park as well as a look at earlier and later works of conservation in the Natural State.

Rim Trail Hike
MAY 27, 2008:

Meet a park interpreter at the Rock House Cave trailhead to hike one of the most scenic sections of the Boy Scout Trail. We will be hiking along the rim of Cedar Creek Canyon. This hike is about 1-mile long and will take about 1½ hours. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water.

Dutch Oven Breakfast

The early bird gets the breakfast! Cooking outdoors is one of the most-loved traditions of camping in a state park. Learn how to use a Dutch oven to make a delicious breakfast. Be ready for a tasty sample.

CCC Legacy Stroll
MAY 28, 2008:
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM Meet in the picnic area near pavilion A.
Join Park Interpreter Natalie for an easy stroll to see some works of the Civilian Conservation Corp’s work at Petit Jean State Park. The CCC built this park in the 1930s, and much of the park you see today, from buildings to trails, is part of their continuing legacy.

The Legends of Petit Jean
MAY 28, 2008:
2:00 PM - 2:30 PM Meet at Stout’s Point (Petit Jean's Gravesite Overlook).
Petit Jean is a strange and fascinating mountain with many natural wonders, but that isn’t all that is fascinating. Meet Park Interpreter Rachel to discover some stories surrounding the naming of this mountain during the early days of exploration.

8:30 PM - 9:00 PM Meet at the amphitheater.
Join Park Interpreter Rachel to see how quickly you can guess the identity of some mysterious natural objects, which you might be lucky enough to encounter when you explore Petit Jean State Park.

Cedar Falls Overlook Stroll
MAY 29, 2008:
9:00 AM - 9:30 AM Meet at the Cedar Falls Overlook parking area.
To know Petit Jean Mountain, you have to know Cedar Falls. Join Park Interpreter Rachel for this easy 1/4 mile stroll. We will see what surprises lie along the way and enjoy the view of Cedar Falls from the overlook. We recommend bringing water and binoculars if you have them.

Vulture Watch
MAY 29, 2008:
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM Meet at the Palisades Overlook.
Meet Park Interpreter Rachel to observe the vultures of Petit Jean State Park, along with some spectacular scenery. We will also keep an eye out for hawks and other birds. Bring your binoculars if you have some.

Quick Skull Identification

Have you ever seen animal bones on the side of a trail and wondered what type of animal it could have been? Join Park Interpreter Elizabeth to learn some tricks and tips for telling what skull belongs to whom.

The Dating Game

8:30 PM - 9:00 PM Meet at the amphitheater.
Brush up on your calling, be ready to chase, or simply wear your brightest colors because it is time to play the Dating Game! Join Park Interpreter Elizabeth for this exciting presentation about the courtship rituals of various animals found here at Petit Jean State Park.

Wake Up Hike
MAY 30, 2008:
8:30 AM - 9:00 AM Meet at the Bear Cave Trailhead.
Morning can be one of the best times to experience the forest on Petit Jean Mountain. Join Park Interpreter Elizabeth as the forest's plants and animals begin to wake up and stretch. This hike will be veerry slooww so we can try to hear and possibly see some animals collecting breakfast. And please try to dress yourself and children in quiet clothing…shhhh.

Native American Rock Art
MAY 30, 2008:

Meet Park Interpreter Elizabeth to see how the ancient paintings at Rock House Cave may have been created. You'll also have a chance to make your own pocket pictographs.

Pirate Treasure Hunt

2:00 PM - 2:45 PM Meet at the demonstration area.
Join Park Interpreter Rachel to hear the legend of Petit Jean’s pirate. After the story, we will be going on a treasure hunt near Lake Bailey. If you have a compass, please bring it. A few compasses will be provided if you don’t have one.

Arkansas Wildflowers

Spring, summer, fall, sometimes even in winter – Arkansas abounds with many different kinds of wildflowers, adapted to many different growing conditions. Join Park Interpreter Rachel to view a sampling of these colorful beauties, especially those that can be found at Petit Jean State Park.
